I live in an apartment that is the back half of a house; my landlord, an eccentric but youthful-looking lady of about 50, lives in the front. She and her "boyfriend," an older black man who's served time for drug-dealing and apparently attempted murder many years ago (though he seems fine - I've often talked to him - and he shovels my walkway), constantly fight and swear in the front apartment. I don't trust him and am fairly sure that he often threatens her (with violence and probably worse), but she won't kick him out (which very much baffles and irritates me). In any case, since I know and often talk to them both, I feel weird calling the cops - though I usually want to - when I hear them fighting. Thoughts? Opinions?

I know for a fact that the property belongs to her, and they aren't married. I don't know why it's so hard for some people to throw a loser's a.ss out on the curb.

You pay your rent and you have a right to peace and quiet. The police will not tell who called them so you are safe there. Are you going to be ok with one of them killing the other? How many times a day does that happen? If there is true violence going on, the police will haul in the one who put marks on the other. A night in the clinker usually puts a stop to it until they get drunk again. Two nights in the clinker and one usually moves out and things quiet down. Good Luck and God Bless

LOL, very interesting that you had to let us know he was black. You could have just told us about his criminal history... But anyway, like someone else stated, you have a right to have peace and quiet where you reside. Yes you should call the police because of the disturbance, if it is indeed disturbing you. Besides, you never know, the boyfriend may have warrants anyway. If you feel uncomfortable about calling the police and if you are close with your landlord, why not ask her if the boyfriend has been threatening her? Again, however, if the noise is loud and bothers you, then call the police and state that there is a "disturbance" at the residence, you don't have to give your name, and if you are worried about the boyfriend, leave the house and call from a payphone so your call can't be traced directly to you.

I hate to say this, but it depends on what city & state you are in. I am a survivor of domestic violence. I moved from PA to FL, & here the police will believe the man first. In your case, He might own the building. Move if you can.

Obviously you either need to learn to live with the noise or move out.

It sounds like there's nothing but a bad relationship going on.

(If you ever feel like the guy beat her up--or the other way around--you'd have a moral obligation to call the cops regardless of your feelings.)
