Just boot the XP installation disk to the command prompt. Type C:\format and your done. Or just let XP format complete then turn the computer off. XP wont be installed and the drive will be formated.

You could try the following:
Open a command prompt,
Type 'format c: /u'
Answer 'yes' to the prompt
Or the following:
Boot a win98 install CD
Tell it to format the disk as 1 partition during the boot
When the format completes, power off the laptop.
Or the same with the WinXP install CD.

formatting and reinstalling domicile windows would not wipe your disk. With a $29 application or any kind of freeware procedures, i will unformat your disk in a couple of minutes. It now no longer demands a professional to get well a formatted disk......have faith ME, i've got carried out IT ON a working laptop or laptop THAT MY pastime "FORMATTED" AND GAVE TO ME. I RECOVERED some VERY gentle HR DOCUMENTATION! Get Darik's Nuke and Boot. acquire the ISO or floppy version (the iso is extra effective in case you are able to burn a cd image). it could take an hour or 2 with the customary wipe, as much as three days with a branch of protection point of wiping. Boot the CD and hit enter for AUTONUKE.......... formatting will defend you from idiots, DoD wipe protects you from the extra technical human beings.

a boot disk formats your harddrive and reinstalls an operating system on the hardrive. There would be no point in having a laptop with no operating system because you wouldn't be able to do anything. you would turn it on and it would do nothing

You would use to have to use something like DOS, I'm not sure what they would use these days for XP, but a bootdisk would be required to completely format your harddrive.
