Although I am not a historian, it is my understanding that the Kings and Queens of England, and for that matter most European countries, are crowned on the head.

They tried to crown them on the knee for a while, but the crowns kept slipping off and making a heck of a noise on that parquet floor in the palace.

The coronation takes place in westminster abbey. The chair they sit on is 700 years old. It was made for King Charles I. It used to contain the stone of scone but that has been returned to Scotland. Hope this helps
