I was on the commitee of a charity benefit poker run. I am suspicious that someone within our group is using the event for their own profit. (tax deduction for donation). She owns a gas station/ convience store. She just tells us that she can get it cheaper through the store. She keeps all the receipts for the items she supplies for the benefit until the last minute to turn in to be reinbursed. Is she wrong for using the tax deduction for the business? Or am I overreacting?

Is she double dipping ? She gets reimbursed and she tells us that she is not deducting this on her taxes but she only turns in copies of the receipts. She says she is keeping them safe.

If she uses it as a tax decuction as a contribution and you folks reimburse her she is dead wrong.

Create a system that requires her to have her receipts in by the 1st of every month for the preceeding month.

You can not stop her from doing the wrong thing, but you can make requirements for you folks to feel comfortable.

good luck

When you work on charity projects , some one does the fund raising, and then you have the 'behind the scenes' She is allowed to turn in receipts for items that are used for that project, but only that project. IF SHE GAVE A DONATION, SHE CAN DEDUCT THE DONATION- NOT ALL EXPENSES FROM EVERY RECEIPT. AND if she is able to get the stuff cheaper thru her business, it is ok!

I have also had a business that it was cheaper to get the stuff thru my business for a charity project. IN THE LONG RUN everyone wins, because not that much money is being spent and if you have allocated so many $ for charitable donations - there you go...

I have also run many projects and that came up alot... it seems fishy and dirty and underhanded, but she is just trying to save the project some money, and meet a commitment for donation. ok
