Are they emo?

Question

My friend and I are in a debate here. She is obsessed with Fall Out Boy and Panic At The Disco. I think they are emo! They look it, and even sound like it. She doesnt think so.

So to settle this once and for all, Im asking you. Do you think they are emo? If so, give a good explanation why so I can rub it in her face that I am right and she is wrong! >:D

Also, can you name some other emo bands (just to prove my point even more).

FOB is definately emo since they said so themselves, well pete said it himself anyways. panic, says that they're not emo even though they're music is emo and they look emo. with the tight jeans and hoodies. dark hair, except ryan and spencer with brwonish hair. ryan and brendon are very emotional when they're on concert. i go with whatever the bands says. if fall out boy say their emo then they are. patd, not emo, even though i want them to admit they're emo. listen to their music and read the lyrics. ryan and pete write really emotional music. so mayber they're emo, but not the other band members.

AFI is a punk band (duh!)
Fall Out Boy consider themselves as pop rock.
as for Panic! at the disco they consider themselves a fusion sound that combines elements of pop, electronica, dance, emo, and rock.

i'm emo/goth specific there's a distinction and that i'm a mix of the two... My dad calls me emish, i'm waiting for that to capture on haha... Emos are super the kind rocks alongside with the style in song and clearly emo is created by making use of no longer ordinary lives or pasts regardless of the undeniable fact that, this would not propose we are constantly unhappy and depressed we do smile!!

well... as stupid as it seems, a new branch has stemmed called scene. scene is pretty much just when you look emo.. the people who dress in the tight jeans, the boys wearing makeup and such, are called scene kids.. with this new group, emo pretty much just describes the sound and the lyrics. fall out boy isn't really emo... pete wentz (the bassist) is kind of scene, but thats about it.. their lyrics aren't very emo nor is their sound. panic! also is scene, but they have emo lyrics too. some other bands that coule be considered emo with regards to their sounds are: Death cab for cutie, the used, and bright eyes.. hope that helps kinda clears things up.

Yes. But it is not how you see it, youre thinking of emo as slitting your wrist, Hating people and etc.-That is a huge Stereotype.
Emo can describe a fashion commonly worn by Pete Wentz and it can just be how you sing music. Emo=Emotional alot of love songs are emotional, but you dont call them emo. If your thinking that being emo is all about being "dark" listen to Fall Out Boys album "Take This To Your Grave" and decide if its a happy album or a dark, mad, sad album.

I agree with skater. Fall out boy is straight pop punk, while Disco is partly emo with some pop punk. All rockstars today wear makeup, so that doesnt mean they are emo. Also FOB doesnt sing about death or hate or anything. I'm not so sure about panic at the disco.

If you define a band's genre simply by how they look, then you've swallowed the marketing ploy of the mainstream music industry...hook, line, and sinker. Sad.
Who cares "how they look"? The important questions are: Are they talented? Do they make good music? The answer to both is NO. Both of those bands suck! However, if you insist on classifying them, I'd say they fall into the "cheesy, mainstream, power-pop flavor-of-the-week category".

Emo is basically a dumb point of view. Just cause someone paints their nails black (ahem, couple answers above), doesn't make them emo. You can shop at Abercrombie and be 'emo' if you want.

The fact of the matter is, fall out boy and P!ATD are just stupid.

To me they are totally emo. The make-up, the clothes, everything about them is emo. Another emo band would be AFI.
