You can't leave them alone. A severe infestation can defoliate a tree real fast. Sounds like you have either tent caterpillars or an early hatch of gypsy moth. The best thing to do is to look up a commercial spray company in the Yellow pages of your phone book. It should be under "exterminators" Look for one who does landscape applications and set up an appointment. They can usually respond within a couple of days if not the same day.. It may cost you a little, (used to be around $50.00 back in the day) but it is worth it.. Hope this helps...

Billy Ray, If the nest is on a small enough branch, can't you cut off the branch and throw it in the trash? At least that's what my neighbor does for everyone on our street.

Leave them alone and they will become butterflys or moths later in the year. They certainly won't hurt you as they are vegitarian only.

They won't hurt you, but if you just freak at them, you might try looking for somewhere to get larvae of "Assassins Bug's". It will take a few years, but they'll eat the caterpillars.
