Depends on if a cult of personality candidate like Nader is running.
Consistently the Libertarian party has been the largest and most elected 3rd party in the US. There are over 500 elected Libertarians holding office in the US, mostly in low level municipal government positions. The only exception is Ron Paul the US congressman from Texas who runs as an R but is really an L.

The National-Union is the largest third party because our party won at least 2,400,000 millions of voters, which is one State. Not just any State but a State with the third largest electoral votes. Our third party is the number one of all parties in general when it comes to resolutions to the economy and diplomacy approved by voters at least 68%, http://www.voteprimous.com

Libertarian, but the Green party typically generates for votes.
This is because libertarians generally vote for the republican candidate as not to "waste" their vote. Meanwhile, Green party members vote true party lines with no hope of success.
This behavior has cost the democratic contender 2-5% in the last few presidential elections.

The real question is why is that the news media does not cover all the parties durning the Presidental elections? They want the 2 so they can control more of the votes, and get more tv money for ads.
Demand the more are covered and you learn more of them.
