First gets the gold, thus 'go for the gold' as the saying goes. Second gets silver, third gets bronze medals. Any of these winners have nothing to be ashamed of. They are the best 3 in the world. Just getting IN the Olympics is an awesome accomplishment and all participants can be very proud of themselves.

A medal is awarded to winners,runners-up, and second runner up of sporting, academic, artistic and other competitions.
The general format for giving medals is that first gets Gold, second Silver, and third gets Bronze. Though sometimes they give varying awards and such for various competitions, the Olympic games run off of the general order: Gold, Silver, Bronze.
