Set in a little village in Russia, focussing on this kid. I don't remember much plot, but I remember some of the things that happened.

There were: kids boxing in the roof of a barn, kids trying to make their own spaceship after Sputnik went up and ending up with this wooden box on a wire strung from the roof of a house, and a young girl trying to disguise herself as a boy so she could keep on boxing with her friends. Possibly someone fell through some ice too, but that might not have happened.

If anyone has seen this film and can remember a title or director or anything, it'd really help me out. Thanks a lot.

What you're describing sounds a little, maybe, like a 1985 Swedish film titled, "My Life as a Dog". It's the story of a boy who, because of his mother's illness, is sent to live with relatives in a small rural village. The title comes from the boy's identification with Laika, the dog sent up into space during the early soviet satellite experiments, who was left to die in orbit, abandoned and alone.

Check this title out on the Internet Movie Database to see if it tallies with the movie you saw. Might also be a photo or lonks to photos, so you can make sure.
