Inboard marine motors are totally enclosed within the hull as opposed to an "outboard motor." These can vary from a one or two cylinder diesel auxilliary motor for a sailboat to the huge Rolls-Royce Merlin engines used in off-shore racing boats.

There is another variation, the inboard/outboard which has an inboard automotive type engine powering an outboard lower unit via a shaft.

Marine inboard engines typically turn in the opposite direction to the automotive installations because of traditional propellor design...

Inboard motors are nothing more than automotive motors with closed cooling systems. Instead of a transmission there is a prop shaft that exits the stern of the boat and a prop is attached....that is a inboard motor very simplified.
