You can make a like pond cheap that looks nice. 300 gallons is a good size for an aquarium. I have seen them in front yards. You will need a fountain pump to aerate the water in an artificial pond.

245 gallon pond for 39.99 with the pump and everything.
They are the cheapest for the liner and fountain. However be careful with your kids. Any body of water can be a drowning hazard for youth.

Your back yard doesn't need to be large if you are wanting a garden pond. If that is all you want you can purchase a preformed garden pond that only holds 100 gallons. that is certainly large enough for no more than 4 goldfish and a whole lot of plants around and inside the pond.
Below are some links for ideas.
azponds is where I order almost everything because of mostly free shipping. The kits come with everything you need to setup. If you have a spare space of 7x12 in the back yard it would be a good size. Remember they can beome very expensive to maintain so do your homework first to see what size is right for you.
I Love mine..........
Good Luck!

You really have to go to your town hall and find out what the laws are in your town. Ponds can change a lot in the environment and sometimes the town will fine you if you put in a pond. A thing you can do is get one of those plastic little ponds that they have at places like Home Depot and some plant stores.

I have a small backyard and a pond (which I might add I love). I started out with a pre-fab pond from Wal-Mart. Then went to a larger liner pond. When I had a question I went to www.gardenweb.com..then go to forums and then to ponds and aquatic plants. They have been most helpful for me.
Check them out and I am sure they will help you with all your questions.
Hope this helps..

not that big. i have a really small back yard and have a decent pool. you can shape the pond to work with your space in your yard. it doesn't have to be round.
