Soft cheeses tends to mean the kind that ripen and go runny ie Brie. French women still eat them all, however. Cream cheese and cottage cheese are fine.

Although both cottage cheese and philadelphia cheese are soft in texture, they are not classified as soft cheese. Cottage cheese is classified as a curd cheese and philadelphia is classified as a cream cheese. Both of these cheeses are safe to eat during pregnancy. However, they are not the best types to go for because they are both low in calcium.
The best advice regarding cheese choices during pregnancy is:
• Only choose cheese made from pasteurised milk.
• Opt for hard cheese such as cheddar, edam or gouda as they are the best sources of dietary calcium and the need for calcium increases by 50% in the second half of pregnancy.
Cheeses that are not recommended during pregnancy are soft cheeses such as blue cheese, brie cheese or camembert cheese. Also, any cheese made from unpasteurised milk is not recommended. Cheese made from unpasteurised milk, must state this on the label by law. If you are buying cheese from a delicatessen or cheese shop, the cheese may be cut from a large round of cheese and so there may not be a label on the piece you buy. In this case, always ask for confirmation that the cheese is made from pasteurised milk before making any purchase.
Hope that help....

No, cottage cheese is a great thing to eat during pregnancy. It has high levels of protein and calcium. I lived on cottage cheese in the first trimester. I would mix it with tomatoes and occasionally pineapple.
I believe the soft cheeses you are referring to are types of cheese such as brie.

Check with your Doctor! I ate cottage cheese when I was pregnant, and I was fine. It is a great form of Protein. Ask your doctor to give you a list of things that would be good for you to eat while you are pregnant, he should have some pamphlets for you to read about the do's and don'ts of pregnancy.

"What to Expect When You're Expecting" is garbage. Really.
Go read the reviews on Amazon, and pay attention to the negative ones -- there're a lot of them, and they come from anybody who read any other book besides that one. It teaches you how to worry, and how to be a good little patient who'll agree to any intervention thrown your way, and not much more.
Anyway.
Eat all the cottage cheese you like.
Eat all the pasteurized soft cheese -- which is most soft cheese in N America -- you like.
And throw out that book!
