Wash the walls with dish soap and water if it is heavy. If it is light use a Mr. Clean eraser. Rise, and let dry.
Buy some Kilz paint. It will cover the smell and give you a white base primer for your regular paint.
Read the label on the Kilz paint for best directions. This is the same stuff contractors use to refurbish homes and businesses from smoke damage and water damage.

I agree about using TSP or TSP substitute. Ans sewwoody is right about Kilz, It will seal in any smoke odor and prevent stains from bleeding through to your top coat. Or use another primer-sealer, such as Bulls Eye. Has to be a primer-SEALER.

First wash your walls down with an all purpose cleaner.
THEN
Paint it with *KILZ* = Kilz seals in the smoke and the odor also plus leaving it ready to paint.

If you can find a brick similar to one your fireplace is then good . With clear water wet the brick and rub against the brick work , this will make your fireplace like new again
