Because Penn State joined and Big Ten sounds better than Big Eleven. Also, it is a more symmetrical number sort of like the Ten Commandments.

the reason there are 11 teams in the big 10 is penn state joined a few years back making 11 teams...and why they dont change the name is because its been there the whole time and teams leave and join different leagues all the time...take the big east and conference usa....four or five teams left the C-USA for the big east...so teams leave and join all the time...hope this helps....

They would like to get 12 so they can have a conference championship game in football. They took in Penn State to get to 11, then gave an invitation to Notre Dame, but the Irish turned them down. I believe they are still looking for that elusive twelfth school.

I don't know, but there are odd number of teams in many conferences. For example the American East has nine. It probabaly has something to do with new collegescomming in around the midwest area
