Depends. Anymore all philosophers are, are avid historians of philosophy itself and chronic-quoters of their favorite thinkers. A real philosopher is always thinking and evaluating the world at complete face-value and disregarding the blue-prints-of-thought that some old dead guys wrote. Some of the greatest, most wise philosophers I know don't even know who Hegel or Kant were.
Truly, I believe you must be born one. To be asking questions as soon as the doctor was yanking you out of your mom. To be deep and inquisitive far long after puberty. To feel empowered by your thoughts and no one else's.
Philosophy majors are made. Philosophers are born.

Born. Seems to get to the level of extraordinary you will need to have a life story that reads out like philosophy, like the wife you had, the day you became ill, things like this. Learn from the ancients such as who you have mentioned but remember, what you can come up with will surpass for society is more known.

Both can happen. Being a philosopher just means being someone who questions everything and thinks about everything. Sometimes I think children are the best philosophers, they're not yet afraid to ask some of the best questions.

I think that an extraoridinary philosopher has to be made. According to John Locke we are all born "tabula rosa" or as a blank slate. If we are born empty, then it would take experiences to fill us. We would know nothing about philosophical ideas or principles. It is through experiences that we even learn to think.

BORN, definitely. We can't change the way how our aptitude, or reasoning power has settled in our brains. We can't change the real us no matter what we do, we may gain a lot of knowledge and brought us far ahead in life, but to be a philosopher, it requires a lot of crucial thinking and reasoning.

I would have to say both, because you are alive, that means that you were born. Also, God says in His word, that even before you were conceived in your mothers womb, he knew who you were. God knows the utmost end, from the very beginning. We all have a purpose in which God made us, and yes you were a philosopher before you were even thought about by your parents, and that is what I believe, through the word of God.

Intellect we are born with, knowledge we learn. It takes both to be a philosopher. Otherwise we would always be re-inventing the wheel.

you have to be born with the necessary attributes and then study history and philosophy. The kid who always questions the answers is on the right track.
