Because sometimes movies bring out an emotion within ourselves. It's just the same as when you laugh at something they did, or sympathize with a character. It's just getting your emotions.

Perhaps its because we are taught we are weak when we cry about something real, so we transfer our emotions to something not real to make ourselves feel better.

because if the actors are good we usually empathese with them, so if they are going through something sad, we feel it..only if it's a good storyline, with realistic actors and actresses and has been directed well.
