Go to Cape Town. It's gorgeous and crime free compared to places like J-berg. You'll like it.

If you have young children then the seaside offers a super time. The Cape Town west coast has FREEZING water but the East coast at Muizenberg is super and mild. The alternative is Mhlanga Rocks just north of Durban which has the warm Indian ocean to swim in. There are also some super Game Reserves up the North Coast from Durban and the new Shaka World oceanarium is fantastic.
Kruger Park is a perennial favourite and very safe.

If you are going to SA for a family vacation then you are probably going to spend most of your time in the national parks which are as safe as any other national park. In the cities you just need to be aware of your surroundings and if you feel uncomfortable get out of the area.
