Sorry... still giggling over "using condoms while breastfeeding"... trying to wrap my brain around hubby standing there with a condom, confused, as I nurse the baby.... ;) Bad visual!

Yes, you are probably fertile again and cannot count 100% on breastfeeding as a form of birth control. If you don't want to use hormonal BC (it can interfere with milk supply, but varies from woman to woman), there are other options, including NFP (Natural Family Planning). NFP is not the same as the "rhythm method". It involves a lot more in the way of physical signs and symptoms of fertility throughout the cycle. With NFP, once you get to know your body and its signals, you can reliably tell on any given day whether you are fertile, or infertile. The few days a month when you may be unsure, are days when you should abstain from sex.

It may or may not be right for you. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

It's normal for a woman to become fertile while breastfeeding. And when she's fertile and breastfeeding, she can or cannot get her period. You could be fertile 4 months ago and have not gotten pregnant by luck. I know people treat breastfeeding like birth control, but look at all accidental pregnancies such birth control caused! That's why there are so many siblings with very little age difference.

If you're not planning on another baby, you may want to consider male birth control (and I'm not talking about condoms), or, if it doesn't work for your husband, find out about FemCap (non-hormonal birth control). NFP (Natural Family Planning) is not very reliable, because sperm sometimes can survive for up to 10 days even! It's rare, but it has happened before. I personally know a couple who had an unplanned baby practicing NFP.

Your OB/GYN will know all options that may work for you - talk to the doctor.

You can be fertile at any time when you are breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is not a means of birth control or period control. It's different for every woman, some don't have a period the entire time they are breastfeeding, and then there are women like me, my period was as regular as it ever was while I was breastfeeding.

whether your breatfeeding or not, you are always at your most fertile after having a baby. You can get pregnant before you even start to have your period again after a baby. Starting your period is not a good way to decide whether or not now is the time to start birth control if you do not wish to have another child so soon. You should start birth control as soon as possible to prevent any "slip-ups". My doctor recommended birth control right after delivery. My nurse also suggested that I start birth control right away if I'm not wanting another pregnancy so soon and not to let my period be the deciding factor on whether or not it was time to start birth control because I could get pregnant before my actual period started.

Yes you are fertile. Breastfeeding is not a form of birth control, whether you have resumed menstruation or not so be sure to use another form of birth control if you are not planning on more kids in the near future.

I know that breast feeding can delay the chances of pregnancy, but as you are having periods you must be fertile. Start using birth control if you do not want another baby right now!

Yes to have a period, you have already ovulated...This is precisely why breastfeeding can NOT be counted on as a method of birth control...you should thank your lucky starts that you weren't fertilized a few weeks ago...If you don't want another yet or at all get on B.C. PRONTO!!!

I was reading on Dr. Sear's that usually the first period you get, you don't actually ovulate. The chance of it is 5%. So, with the next cycle you could. I'd use some natural family planning methods to avoid another pregnancy if you're not ready yet.

Yes. There is a real misconception about breast feeding Mothers not being fertile. Look how may children are born a year or less apart!

Yes you could get pregnant now although depending on how exclusively you're BF it could take months for you to ovulate on a regular basis. You may want to consider using another method of birth control now if you don't want another pregnancy yet.
