Even golf and NASCAR ratings are better. I mean, NO ONE watches it!

Because not everyone has an open mind to give hockey a chance. I am a hockey fan and a New York Rangers fan. I always enjoy watching hockey. The people who don't give it a chance are missing out. It is a fast and exciting sport.

The schedule and the channels chosen to air the games both stink. Only recently has the advertising improved (i.e. new commercials featuring NHL players).

As far as NASCAR goes, their ratings are up since it's become the "in" thing to watch. My father-in-law has been following NASCAR for 20 years. It's only gotten popular because of the marketing and "trend" it has become. I don't think the fan base has nearly as many "hard-core" fans as the NHL.

Professional hockey is here to stay...with or without the bandwagon hoppers. If the league wants to attract more fans, make it more available.

Hockey has continuously been a niche activity, so it truly is been very confusing to get over the "artwork stoppage". The powers that be have made this issue a lot worse by technique of eliminating the difficult-housing. Hockey without the difficult stuff is parent skating. they are taking the manliness out of hockey. yet another killer determination became the over-enlargement of hockey. It only would not resemble the hockey of previous, and that i imagine it rubs truly some hockey followers as only undeniable incorrect once you've communities in Florida, California, etc. It only looks strange. As an American, i became rooting for Ottawa because Anaheim would not look like an section the position hockey is performed. i understand that is only no longer logical, yet activities are ruled by technique of emotion.

well, the NHL is going through a sort of redefining... personally i feel as though the thugs are going to removed altogether... there is too much fighting for parents to let their kids watch it. even basketball gets a stiff punishment for throwing a punch... it's just unnecessary.

the only guys that are strongly in favor of it are the old timers who would watch it either way.

the lock out really REALLY killed the ratings... but with the new NHL - things should be looking up
i know i live in pittsburgh and out fair city cares way more about the Penguins than the steelers or pirates...

i could name at least ten people that were more excited to find a dollar in their pants than the steelers winning the superbowl.

Future of hockey looks good. Future of the commisioner I'd say looks poor for signing a horrible TV deal. Hockey is as strong as ever and the only place where ratings are poor is in the US. Stanley Cup Playoffs get record numbers in Canada and poor results in the US. CBC, Sportsnet and TSN have excellent coverage and have good ratings.

Ratings are poor because no one gets Vs and basically no one in America really cares about hockey at all. The future? As long as there is a Bettman in it, the future looks very bleak. How about getting a real hockey lover as Commish, like Gretzky or Orr and put hockey back on track.

What it says is that the contract the NHL has is lousy. The ratings don't take local channels into account, like FSN (Fox sports network) take those into account, ratings jump quite a bit.

As for the NHL, it only says that Bettman's days are limited. the next commissioner will get a much better contract with ESPN, a channel most people get. VS is often on premium packages (thank god not in our area)

The networks aren't savvy to the hockey fan. They don't show games on a regular schedule like other sports. If you want to see a game you have to search the channels for it, know who is playing when, and know what channel shows that teams games. If the NHL wants hockey to stay alive they need to promote it on a regular basis. Networks need to get on the bandwagon and getover the NHL strike! Where I live we have an ECHL team that sells out tickets nearly every night! I watch hockey every chance I get. BUT I have to 'look' for it!

Because some sports (hockey) do not appeal to many American communities, due to limited public access, widespread youth programs, and rinks. Hockey will always have a loyal, American fan base. The NHL will be safe if it doesn't rely on too many gimmicks, in order to attract fans. Keep in mind....Hockey is Canada's national pastime....They have "Hockey Night in Canada" just like we have "Monday Night Football". I think it's fine just the way it is..."to each, his own".

Well no one gets VS. Then I watched the Pens vs Flyers on NBC last Sunday and I swear I thought I was watching Cable Access. That was HORRIABLE coverage. If it wasn't my Pens playing I don't think I could have watched it, could barely watch it as was. NOW if they took in the ratings of LOCAL stations, like Fox Sports they might find it has better ratings. They only go by the major contracts of NBC and VS. if I am not mistaken.
