When I was between 6 and 8 years old, I was adopted by an older woman. (I've always called her grandma.) Unfortunately, she doesn't remember when my birthday is and she burned my birth certificate about 30 years ago. Any ideas?

The CDC has a state by state list of where to write for your birth certificate. Note that since you were adopted, you may not be able to obtain your original birth certificat without petitioning the court. It depends on the adoption records laws in your state and county. However the Vital Records department will be a good first start for you. The state-by-state list is located here

Good luck!

Try your time travel method that you used to go back to 1914, except this time use it to go back 30 years to heroically stop your grandma from burning that certificate. Don't forget to buy some JC Penney stock while you're there.

Some resources:
The registrar/recorder's office for the state (or, if you know it, the county) in which you were born
The state, county, adoption agency, or lawyer who facilitated your adoption
Adoptee rights organizations, such as Bastard Nation (http://www.bastards.org)
