is amsterdams coffee shops closing? heard a rumour that they were getting shut down and also brothels etc - p.s this question is for my male friends benefit

coffee shops and sex industry are separate entities... the sex industry (red light district) was having some legal problems whith the mayor earlier this year and the mayor threatened to close a lot of them immediately but he backed down again and postponed doing so to at least after the summer...

Can you imagine what Amsterdam would be like without coffee shops, where would the visitors get a cup of coffee while shopping, ( a massive uproar would happen)
Brothels, that another matter, I wouldn't use them, only the men would make a fuss about this.

I doubt if they'll shut the brothels down. The Dutch job centre recognizes 'sex worker' as a profession. And there's loads of coffeeshops outside Amsterdam. Only tourists think that coffeeshops are indigenous to Amsterdam ;-)

i heard that the coffee shops aren't closing down but they are considering only allowing residents to use them and not the tourists. i wouldn't know about the brothels though, but i would doubt it.

I read that as each coffee shop closes they will not let another open , but don't worry there's loads and I don't think they are all going to close just yet.

Yes - it is true.
All the brothels are being turned into flower shops and all the coffee houses are being turned into orphanages for homeless snails and puppy dog tails.

Hope not Amsterdam rocks as it is, i think their tourist trade would hit rock bottom if that happened

I was there in December and no one mentioned anything about it then so i think your male friend will be o k for his coffee !
