I have recently begun to take up singing so that i can be the singer for my band, but i have a problem. When i sing i can sound very monotone and almost like im talking. Is there a reason why im doing this, and if there is what exercises can i do to help it? Thanks a lot

Is your band playing songs with actual tunes? I mean, after all, rap has no tunes in it, so it's kinda hard not to be monotone there.
Does the band play all songs in the same key? That'll get monochromatic very quickly.
What are your lyrics about? Do they express feelings that also go up and down, or do they stay on the same track?
I know these are peripheral questions, but they might make a difference.
As far as singing technique goes, pay attention, next time you sing, as to how relaxed and easy your lower jaw, throat and tongue are. If they are under any tension, your sound will come out sounding clenched, pinched, and definitely al of one color. You need to allow your voice to come out, so open up that whole area. Try practicing one of your songs in front of a mirror. It's a horribly honest tool. You can't escape what you see. So try and learn how to relax, and see how much more comfortable you look and feel. When your body ( and brain) have accepted that as fact, you'll be able to dispense with the mirror, knowing that that comfortable feeling is one that gets good results.
Best wishes and keep on singing

Try singing scales slowly and play along on a piano. Try to listen to what you are singing, and use your ear. Also you can try singing in thirds. Do excersises were you are singing a lot of different notes to lose the habbit of monotone singing. Good Luck!

try singing in ranges, different octaves. Record yourself and listen. Feel the words.
