I guess it all depends on what shape you want to make the hat. Since foil is so easy to shape into various shapes the possibility's are endless. I think the "coolness" factor will rise with the complexity of the hat.
As far as a new trend goes.... Anything is possible! What you will need is exposure to make your "foil-ware" a huge success. What you need to do is find out where an "on-the-street TV news reporter is doing a live shot and walk back and forth behind him or her as they do their report on the news. People will see your awesome hat, and want to wear one just like it. Just make sure you get a website first, and make sure your website address is visible on the hat while you are on TV. After the story airs, you will be flooded with requests for foil hats, and you will be laughing all the way to the bank with all the cash you will make!
Just don't forget to cut me a check after you make all that money for coming up with this great marketing idea!!!

There is a man in my town who used to wear a foil hat to block out radio waves. He used to talk to himself, and acted as if he had schizophrenia. He doesn't wear the foil anymore. Gotta love 'im!
