my grandma just passed and i got a pearl necklace, how can i check to see if they are real?

as long as its not plastic.. but im sure since it's from your grandma, i dont think so.

STEP 1: Run the pearl lightly along the biting edge of your front teeth. A real pearl will feel slightly gritty or sandy, whereas a fake pearl will feel smooth. This is a standard test for authenticity that most sellers will allow, as long as you ask first.

STEP 2: Look at and feel the pearl. Absolutely flawless-looking pearls, as well as those that feel unusually light when you bounce them in your hands, are probably fake.

STEP 3: Examine the pearl under a 10magnifier (a loupe). Imitation pearls appear grainy.

Gently slide them across your front teeth. If the pearls feel gritty then they are real. If they feel smooth then they are fake. My mother taught me this. If you are still unsure, send them to a jeweler to get them appraised.

real pearls have birthmarks(bumps)on them but fake ones are perfectly round
