First check out this article about what the top game designers did to get their jobs:

So now you know some people got their gaming jobs through alot of avenues, but they all loved games, designed games, and many of them created and programmed their own games as well..before ever being hired to work in the field.

It doesn't hurt if you get a degree in graphic design to become a game designer; it would help to be able to add the animation effects yourself to the games as well, but some types of animation and gaming takes lots of programming which you may not be interested in...I know some of our community colleges are adding tech programs just in game programming and design.

In addition to postsecondary training in graphic design and web design, game designers suggest writing and creativity type courses, communication courses and you should have great problem-solving skills. Game designers also need to be familiar with computer graphics and design software.
Good luck!
