the stuff they use at the dentist is called alginate. And it is indeed the safest material you can use for a face mold. It's jelly like. Latex rubber would take way to long to set, also I am not sure about toxicity to skin. Silicones also take usually too long to set, though there may be now a version suitable for skin, but it will be expensive.
I'd go with alginate. It set's very quickly and is non-toxis. The drawback of it is that you only get one cast out of the mold.
Some of the larger art supply stores carry it. Some stores have it as a kit to make a mold of a baby's hand or foot, but they are extra expensive, I guess because there is a cute baby face on the pack. Or call the dental supply stores in the yellow pages for your area. That's where I get it from.

I have four children and want to have a very life-like appearance of their faces. Bronze and Lost wax has incredible detail though I don't believe that I will get much cooperation with that process. I have seen a website by chance that has a very detailed process that might fit for what you're looking for. Here it is: http://www.smoothonsecure.com

There is a plastic compound that is now used to make body molds. You can get from theatrical suppliers. Just tell them you want to make latex masks.

You can use that squishy foamy stuff like they use for making impressions at the dentist's office.

Maybe ask a dentist? There's probably some place you can get it in bulk, or maybe your dentist will hook you up with some for cheap.

At least the dentist will know what you're talking about.
