How many inches should it be from the edge of your sewing table to the needle of your sewing machine?

I would say whatever is comfortable for your arms. I have about 4 inches of empty table in front of my machine.

Agees with Kacky- whatever is comfy for your arm length and height; 4-6 inches sounds okay. However, I like a lot of spare room when sewing heavy or very slippery fabrics to keep things even, so I will place my machine next to an extra craft table sometimes.

6 inches. I have one right beside me now.
