I was just wondering... We all use the term, "Broken hearted" but how did the term originate? What's the heart to do with miserable emotions? Just curious.

Well, the heart is symbolic of our emotions. People used to associate the stomach with emotions. Now they've moved up to the heart. Maybe one day it will be the brain, which would be more accurate since it's really the residence of our thoughts & feelings, but it's not as cute in a Valentine's day card. The truth is that you feel heartbreak in your head, your heart & your stomach. If you've ever lost someone, you know it can feel like a sharp pain in your chest like you've just been struck, followed by a dull ache that doesn't go away for quite some time. I guess they refer to hearts breaking because if the heart is a symbol of something fragile that you give to someone & then they drop it, then it might shatter. Of course hearts aren't really brittle. They're organs filled with blood. I'm not sure where the term originated. A poet would be my guess...Broken hearted sounds prettier than "head ached" or "stomach churned"...A great deal of emotional pain ends up in the stomach. You feel a hollow in your belly, or an ache. Some people even develop ulcers over emotional distress...

Since the heart (I have no idea for how long) has been a symbol of love--as well as deep emotional feelings, it's associated with being "hurt" emotionally. I'm sure you've seen images of the two parts of a heart shape with jagged edges down the middle? Indicating "heart BREAK." Also, the heart shape used in phrases, "I [heart] dogs" or whatever. The heart itself has NOTHING to do with one's feelings. Please remember that extreme stress or truama can cause a heart ATTACK, but that's not being "heart broken." The heart does NOT feel "pain" from feelings of a failed love relationship, etc. It's about as literal as saying "You're blowing my mind" (which can't happen!) Just a phrase, my dear.

Throughout History, and among many cultures throughout the east, and in the west up to at least medieval times, it was believed that the heart was the seat of the mind or emotions.
It has only been in the last few hundred years that this idea has been discarded in the west in favour of the idea that the mind and body are distinctly seperate. However with modern advances in neuroscience an old idea is coming back to roost with the discovery that neurons exist throughout the body, and with the heart possibly having the 'lions share' it is fast gaining the status of a 'little brain'.

Broken hearted there is something missing or something broken.
Peace is the remedy for brokenness.
Peace means nothing missing nothing broken.
It has nothing to do with emotions we just experience broken hearts through our emotions and let our emotions lead us.
Peace gives us a sound mind in all things..meaning we are not governed by our emotions.
I am not sure where the term originated.

I cannot really answer to your question, but want to tell you how love can heal a heart.
I had heart troubles for some time. ( palpitations, is this the right expression?) I needed to take medication.
Then I met a human who woke up in me a "deep" feeling of love and a few days later at night I woke up and felt that part of this persons heart wants to go in my heart and part of my heart wants to go into this persons heart. I had during this time this palpitations and I felt I have to let this experience allow.
So from this day or minute on, my heart was "healed" and I did not take a single tablet anymore and this is years ago.
So whatever it is, love can heal a heart and love then also can break a heart. My heart was broken before and this love healed it again. (Yes, sounds pretty romantic, but it happened just like that)

Heart break is almost the literal truth. Your blood pressure goes up when you go under major stress. The heart swells until it feels like it is about to burst. If the emotional turmoil is sufficent, it will. And, you will literally die of a broken heart.

Love comes from the heart . Unrequited love gives a sense that something in the heart is somehow broken .

The symbol of love is heart, so when you get hurt emotionally, the term heartbreak is used to describe how you feel.

My belief is that God made our hearts to be able to feel pain, joy, fear, love, hate, etc. I believe that every thought whether good or bad starts in the heart first. Read your scriptures in the bible about issues of the heart. God is an awesome God.
