Broad question. What kind of values?

2007-03-10 09:32:40 · answer #1 · answered by Gus 3 · 0 0

British values are mixed. American values are descended from British values, which in turn are inherited from European values for a start. But in modern Britain we have a government telling us to be more European, but TV, Internet, books, films, music etc. from America teaching us American values, and we have a size able immigrant population which has their own values from all over the world.

British values are unique and no where else in the world will you find them, that's the beautiful (or ugly in some peoples case) nature of Britain, its so diverse.
Its no wonder that a small country like Britain has such an impact on the world still, its the values of the British that make it a great country (its just led by people who have no understanding of these values).

Why not turn the question on its head? Who is closer to British values the Americans or the Europeans?

Clearly, when put like this its the American Democrats. Although we have close history with much of Europe I can't think of any nation with which we share the affinity that France and Germany have - we're loners in the European playground. And with America we don't resonate to the Republican beat at all.

A silly question unless you first define what those values are.
Why don't we try and write a definitive list of say 10 British and 10 American values and then compare them to a list of European values (Though who will represent them and write them I don't know since I guess not many will read this)

It will be impossible to agree on I suspect but maybe there are some core values that each group subscribe to?

Well I think the American's actually live to OUR values that you received from us, however you didn't manage to copy our free healthcare, isn't paying for healthcare a bit thirdworldesque? Oh, and Bruce M you really are just jumping on the Anti-EU bandwagon, do you really just blurt out what you read in the Daily Star, France have banned the Burqua in schools something that Tony and his cronies would never have the bottle to do, so that little piece of EU directive you just made up is exactly that, made up. When all is said and done I am not ashamed at being British it but i'm certainly not proud either, look at the European cities on the mainland ( e.g Pisa, Amsterdam, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Florence, Cologne, Berlin). These countries are not as economically stable as the UK but their way of life etc.. is one that I would prefer anyday.

There is no such thing as a britisher you could say Britons or British people but you might also be aware that Britain is 3 seperate countries called England, Scotland and Wales. The English created America so in many ways you were created in their image but you have gone of in your own direction too. British people are European but unlike the rest of Europe we are an island so not completly European.

There's no simple answer here.

We have our own values as do all societies.

Closer is the wrong word for me.

We share some ideals in 'democracy' 'freedom' etc but have our own interpretations as to what they are and how they are expressed.

In a 'romantic' sense a lot of the British would see the Americans as more natural 'allies' due to 1,000+ years of historic conflict within Europe where we have all had alliances with and against each other.

However, if I had to choose who is more likely to share some of our values I would choose countries like Australia, Newzeland and Canada possibly even in some respects India ahead of America.

Value is a broad term. In terms of difference, I think Brits and Europeans aren't as religious as Americans. On this, Americans are perceived, rightly or wrongly as being far too religious, whereas Europeans have a much more relaxed or less intense view.

Britain has German royalty & has fought against the Americans & their French Allies. Britain France & the USA have fought against the Germans. Britain & Americans have fought the French, (Britain regularly fights the French)...... basically everyone allies with whoever is convenient at the time (look how Americans hated the French after the Gulf War, even though they supplied ships & men to support their indipendence).... we have even all fought ourselves in our own civil wars. America has Irish, Russian, German, British etc roots. Britain has been formed from German (saxon), Viking, Norman French etc origins.... we are both nations with 'mongrel' ancestry, with a common language & religious base, & to a great extent, values, (most of which are shared by European countries, Canada, Autralia etc).... its the middle east, Africa & Asia where strange anomalies begin to show between cultures

most Britons are closer to our natural brothers and sisters in America, we have about a quarter of our population who are short sighted and socialist that think its hip to be European, oh what short minds they have, having had to fight countless wars on European soil against the French and Germans.
It's this deep seated affinity with Americans that is the bedrock of our special relationship, we might disagree on certain issues but we always stick together through thick and thin and even though we fought each other in the war of independance relations soon after the British withdrawl soon normalised our links were to strong apart from sour grapes by some silly polititians.
I say stuff europe and get much closer to USA
