Why not? AS LONG AS IT'S "PRE-PAY"!
My kids at that age ran up our cell phone bill to over a $1,000.00 in one month! Yeah, they were clueless, and were letting their friends barrow it and they were talking with no end even after we explained the rules and how it works. Pre-pay taught them that they have only so much per month, when it runs out, so do their phone privileges, and they have to wait til' the next month! This solved them over using it, as well as, lending it out to their friends too!

Being able to find your child is so important especially at this age, when friends start becoming so influential. It's nice to be able to give them a call and say, "hey, where are you, be home on time, I'll be calling you their soon!" or "Hey, I'm getting off of work early and picking you up to go play a little video games and eat some pizza!" Plus if they're ever in an emergency situation a phone can be a savor, especially when their friends make not so smart choices. I never knew how many until we gave them cell phones. And I am ever so grateful we did!

Cingular go phone has a pretty good pre-pay plan that's great for a family. You buy your minutes ahead, however, anyone else who has cingular phones or cingular go phones you talk to for free all you want 24/7! Go check it out! You can choose: "Pay as you go" or "Pick your own plan".

I think 14 is very young to have a cell phone. I personally could go without a phone at all, but because my work is so far away, I have it in case of an emergency. I think if you do have one (in the case of an emergency) it should be a prepaid unless you are using it for business reasons or it is your cell/house phone. 14 is an age to be doing something only b/c everyone else is doing it. --My opinion

yes but I think it depends, your parents should have rules and control over its usage, the 14 year needs to be mature and responsible and parents have to be parents and do their job

My parents had an extra land line installed back when I was a teen before cell phones, I had to pay the bill and I couldnt talk after a certain time of day, so I dont see a cell phone to be much different.

yes. I am 14 and I have to say, I very rarely use it for text messaging to friends. (to tell you the truth, I text message my mother more than I text my friends!) my parents got me one to help keep track of me. I am old enough to go out on my own with friends now, so I just call in every once in a while to let them know where I am, and what I'm doing.
ALSO, if I'm stranded somewhere, like school, I can contact them. this has happened to me and many others before me. I missed my bus and had no other way of contacting my parents. it was a cold day, and the school was locked, so I couldn't get back inside. I would have to walk home, if it wasn't for my cell phone!

Its great to have one in case your Mom wants to find you!
Too young to spend all your time talking on one. There is so much life out there-too many computers and cell phones for young people. Limited time for emergency phone calls OK.

I dont like the idea kids to have cell phones, they need to learn how hard it is to make money and then buy cell phones

I think it depends on how much time the teen spends away from the parents. My daughter got one around that age and for our family it made sense. We live in a major city and she takes a public bus to school and to her afterschool activities. It is a good way to always keep in touch and I've felt safer knowing she had it. Of course, she has had to show continuing responsibility with it, not use it in school or run over her minutes, etc.
Good luck if you are trying to make that decision.
