A race of hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings built a computer named Deep Thought to calculate the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. When the answer was revealed as "42", they were forced to build a more powerful computer to work out what the Ultimate Question actually was. The computer, often mistaken for a planet (because of its size and use of biological components), was the Earth, and was destroyed five minutes before the conclusion of its 10-million-year program. Two of the race of hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings, who turn out to be mice, want to dissect the last remaining survivor from Earth's brain to help reconstruct the question. However, the Earthling escapes, and the mice create a phony question since it is too troublesome for them to wait 10 million years again. So, the new Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything was "How many roads must a man walk down?"

As several have said, the answer is 42. The problem is no one knows the question, which would put the answer in it's proper perspective. Though Arthur and Ford thought they figured it out at one point, the witness who was injected with too much truth serum in Life, the Universe and Everything put that answer to question. According to him, if the answer and the question were ever know at the same time, the universe would cease to exist.
Of course, there is a theory that this has already happened.

42 - however that isnt actually the answer to the question you asked. By the time they came up with the answer, they had forgotten the actual question.

Shouldn't it be how many roads can a mouse walk down seeing it's the mice that are the super intelligent beings and we (man) are just pawns in their intergalatic games?
