depending on his age, he may have blocked tear ducts. if he wakes up regularly with his eyes crusted over with green "sleep" or with green gooey discharge, blocked tear ducts is probably the case. it's a common thing with babies, both my girls had them. it's nothing you did wrong or could've prevented. try massaging the inner corners of his eyes with your pinky in a circular motion or doing it with warm damp washcloth. in most cases, the blockage will claear up on it's own, but if it doesn't, he may need surgery to clear them out. i don't wanna scare you, it's a common and very safe procedure. my 2nd daughter had it and now almost a year later, she's fine. check with your doc and good luck!

Babies dont produce tears at first. It could take a few weeks, or a few months. It doesnt mean their cries arent real (like my idiot sister in law who said my 3 month old daughter was faking her cries). Their eyes produce only enough tears to moisten their eyes. My daughter didnt produce enough to have streaming tears until about 9 months old. If your baby is over a year old, just ask your pediatrician.

depends on how old he is. (along with the other good answers from above me)
babies normally dont cry tears until they are 4-5 months.
They cry so often at that age that they would lose to much water if they cried tears, if after that age then discuss with the childs pediatrician

A newborn's eyes make just enough tears to keep its eyeballs moist. You won't see tears until after 1-3 months. It's perfectly normal if he is younger than 3 months old. :)

If he's older, you should mention it to the pediatrician at his next regular check-up.

How old is your baby, my answer is for babies 9 months or olders. A babies crying is his/her way of communicating. They have no other words, so if she/he is crying without any real tears, you can be assured that he/she is probably not hurt, nor really upset. The child is probably crying because they didn't get their way, they want attention or to try to tell you, hey, I am hungry/thirsty/tired/wet/cold/hot ect...
Even after they get a vocabulary, it isn't unitl they have a large enough one and the ability to communicate their needs that crying is no longer the best way for them to tell us they are in need.

If he's a newborn, he just hasn't started making them yet!

They are just SO cute, those little teeny creatures, and everything doesn't happen at once.

My daughter didn't have tears at first, nor did she have eyelashes. Both came in, a little at a time, over the first month or so.

So CUTE . . . .

Babies cry with no tears when they want your attention, when they need something. Then, they cry with tears when something is hurting. Basically, no tears means they are trying to communicate something! It's perfectly normal.
