I don't drink, I don't do drugs. I am against both but I still have good friends that do both one or both. They know my view point and they respect it. It's not that I'm a prude, trust me, I indulge in other aspects of my life. I really do not see a point in going out and getting buzzed, wasted, stoned, or seeing dancing bears. But being in high and going to college, it just feels like I'm surronded by it and it's a little scary because everyone seems to be obessed with getting high and drunk. What is this obsession?

Anyone who's straight edge? Or just wants to say their opinion about this, go for it.

I'm not saying they are forcing me. No one can make me do something like that to my body. But I'm just wondering if anyone has noticed this growing trend. Seriously, teens make it seems like there is no fun without drinking and drugs.

Well the idea of it was supposed to be having a little fun doing something naughty, and then came addiction. Staying buzzed is a good way to remain irresponsible for a longer period of time. Being so is then blamed on the partying, when actually it is a tool of covering up ones insufficiency's to the point of oblivion if necessary. Most people do these things to have a Utopian place to hide and not deal directly with the world they are afraid to meet up with anyway. That way offers them an excuse to use and be forgiven for not acting responsibly. It only postpones the inevitable and sooner or later they have to stop the excuses and step up to the plate. This is how they chose to not live the life they live. Most who indulge will one day regret having done so to those extremes. You aren't missing a thing!

I don't drink or do drugs and I am a college junior. I have tried drinking in the past, but not enough to get drunk. I didn't like the feeling it gave me after the little high passed.
I don't really see the point of it. College students feel like it can't be a party without one of the two (or both). I think it's because they know what they are doing is boring and repetitive and they need to get buzzed to forget that it's boring and repetitive. What's the point of partying in the first place then? I also feel that some people are just not happy or are stressed out, but can't think of a better way to release their frustruations.
I find nothing wrong with people social drinking, but not at the level some college students do it. I guess the best thing I can say about social drinking (and drugs to some extent) is that it helps people lighten up, that's pretty much the only pro about it. I still prefer not to drink or do drugs, because the pros don't outweigh the cons. Don't feel alone, just keep doing what you do! :-)

Well I have drink in the past. I am 26 now. I can be honest and say that when i did drink, i did have a good time. I never was into drugs, for the same reason as you, i didnt see a point. I too had a friend who didnt drink or do any drugs, we were both from big cities, me from Philly and he was from Harlem. So the temptation was there for alchohol but not as much drugs. The problem is drugs are a more addictive posion being as they stay in your system. The other reason, which i think is the main reason for people doing drugs, they feel like there escaping reality. Just remeber, we all grow up and sooner or later what we do in the past will be our future.

I have mixed feelings about this. True, certain drugs are illegal, and should not be used. And if you don't want to use them, don't. Experimenting is something kids should do, but they need to know the risks involved. Drinking, however, is a legal drug (but not for your age). I disagree with America's drinking age (21), and question where this mystical age came from. You can die for your country, but you can't have a drink? Please know that there is a difference between drinking alcohol and getting $%*& faced drunk. I believe social drinking is okay, and even relaxing at the end of a hard day with a glass of wine is acceptable too. Red wine in moderation is said to be good for your blood vessels.

Just remember that ANYTHING in excess is bad (look at fast food, that's legal, but can be bad for you). But don't spend your life afraid to try things that some people call immoral. Live your life by your own decisions, not others, and keep things in moderation.

Well, i've never done drugs, i prefer to obey the law.

Drinking in moderation is ok. The key word is moderation.

Being drunk or high all the time? Stupid.

Most people for example might enjoy a nice beer or glass of wine on occasion. Someday, you may enjoy these but if you dont thats your free choice, unless you live in muslim country.

Other drugs? Well Marijuana causes cancer 8 times worse than alcohol. The effects of the drug itself in moderation might be ok tho. Certainly there is difference between hard drugs that are deadly and softer ones. I think to, that if they are illegal, yu have to ask wat sort of people are getting your money and how di you know they dont poison u with impurities.

Dude. The early 20's is the 'party years'. College kids, and college aged kids, are well known for tearing it up. Have a few drinks, it won't kill you. If you have never done it, you don't really know what you are talking about, do you? Slowly sip on one or two beers while at a party. No one said you have to chug a gallon or anything. If they do, you're at the wrong party.

Hi, this is Chad at the Crisis Center. We appreciate your call. It seems you have alternative methods of enjoying yourself than most of your friends. We applaud you for your continued commitment to be true to yourself. Our advice is to find other straight laced individuals who share your lifestyle and interests. Your drug using friends are just going to make things more complicated. Our motto is : a man should go where he will not be tempted. It will take some work on your part, but you will be happier and healthier in the long run. Thanks for calling and have a nice day.
