In management today, there is significant emphasis on the use and development of teams to achieve improved productivity. Do you see teams in operation around where you work? What might you think your managers have done or could do better to improve the use and productivity of teams?

I think the most frustrating thing I saw (at my last employer) was the formation of teams that would come up with clear and achievable objectives when revamping a department. The team developed objectives based on other companies successes in a similar department. Then the management refused to have them implemented because they felt "our way" was the best, even though "our way" was costing money. It was very non motivating and a complete waste of time.

The other thing was to acknowledge which employees are not longer an asset (and driving other departments nuts), but do nothing to manage them out or develop another path for them. Or better yet, tell the manager to manage them out, and when he/she starts doing that they tell the manager to stop. Ug!

I think they could have followed through, I have since left, and sure enough the first goal I mentioned was an odd way of doing things, and not a proven successful model. The other is to just make their mind up about people and stick with it.
