no you dont need one! Cribs are fine. We never used ours but to hold diapers, blankets, empty bottles... anything but a baby. lol most of the time the babies were in the bed with us or laying on someone... especially for those late night feedings... im not getting up when i can just roll over.
We also have the pack and play covertable portable play pen. it comes with a bassinet feature (turns into a crib.. fits nice in corner and breaks down for travel easy - i can do it with a baby in one arm. lol) It even has a musical mobile that sits on the side of it.
we were on a serious budget and i learned all of that stuff is not needed at all. When i went to one room, they would be swaddled (which gives them the cozy feeling that they had in the womb) and laid out where ever i was. happy, content, sleeping! lol
A carseat would double as a chair strap em in, and lift the arm of it.. and you would even get a little rocking motion ;)

A crib is fine. I think a bassinet is just to save space in places like the living room and parents bedroom when the baby needs to be close. Beside, the baby willout grow the bassinet VERY quickly while the crib will last longer.

I used a bassinet until my son was about 3-4 months old. It was very handy and I had it right next to my bedside. The main reason was for ease but I also realized that I was not comfortable with him so little, as a newborn, sleeping in a crib. If you do use a bassinet, just remember and be firm about moving the baby to his/her own room, before the six month mark! (If you ever want to be alone at night again!)

You definitely dont NEED a bassinet. Some babies like to be in smaller spaces, and not big open areas like a crib. But, they also outgrow the bassinet in no time. It can be a waste of money.
If you really would like a bassinet, but want to be a little smarter with your money, I would suggest you get a pack n' play. They are great for if you travel, plus the new ones usually have a removable bassinet area up top, plus a changing table, and a diaper stacker.

Well the first thing I will tell you is if you have a dog or cat you won't use a bassinet unless it has a very sturdy stand.
However if you breastfeed and are against co-sleeping they are useful *IF* you don't have room in your room for a crib. If you can put the crib in the room with you it is probably about the same.
Personally I have two cribs, one in the nursery and one as a side car(one side removed) for beside my bed so there is room for everyone and so (in the begining) baby can sleep beside mom but NOT dad which is much safer dads aren't as aware. So he could sleep between me and the "edge" but not fall off.

Bassinets are nice because the baby feels more secure in a small enclosure, having just come from a warm, close environment in the womb.
But if there's no space or money for a bassinet, you can make a small space in the crib and then expand to the full size of the crib when the baby gets bigger.

a crib is fine, you really don't need a bassinet, i think most people use them because they are smaller and can fit in the parents room, so they can get up easier in the beginning when a child wakes up more, or new parents who are nervous about the baby being in another room, but it's not necessary, it's a personal choice

No, but a bassinet or cradle are really nice for the first couple of months so that the baby can be in your room close to you....I always had my kids right next to me for the first couple of months....it makes those night-time feedings a bit easier. I borrowed a bassinet from a friend for my first and then a few friends got together and bought me a cradle for my second (used it for # 3 and it is now put away safely for grand kids someday!).

Bassinets are nice because you can keep your infant right next to you for night feedings. I used the bassinet portion of our pack n play. I really didn't want to buy yet another baby item and I knew we would be using the pack n play a lot (which we have). It worked really well.

You do not need a bassinet. However, if you do not have room in you bedroom for a crib you might want to get one. Also, if you have a big house. You will not want to have to carry your baby upstairs every time she goes to sleep.
