Sixteen is definitely not too late to start playing bass. And because there are far fewer bassists than guitarists, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a band after you've been playing for a while. Guitarists are a dime a dozen, but bass isn't considered glamorous, so fewer people are inclined to play it. Even a mediocre bassist can usually have his pick of bands. Bass is a very instinctive instrument, so as long as you've got a good sense or rhythm, you shouldn't have much trouble learning to play. I got my first bass at 17 (traded a pizza for it) and started playing along with music I liked. Within a few weeks, I was able to match the notes I was hearing pretty easily. And once you can do that, you'll start focusing more on the rhythm. Most bassist I know didn't take lessons, but rather learned by playing along with music. But if that doesn't come easily to you, it's worth taking some lessons to improve. Even though I started playing at 17, I was sitting in with friends' bands by the time I was in college. And as soon as I graduated at 21, I ran an ad seeking bandmates and got tons of calls from bands who were desperate for bassists. I wound up starting my own band and we were playing weekend shows at good clubs within a year. And I'm not someone regarded as musically gifted. So it's definitely possible to play professionally if you're musically inclined and committed to practicing. Most bassists aren't brilliant musicians, so don't worry if you're not the next Stanley Clarke. If you can play along with songs you like and get comfortable noodling around on the fretboard, you'll be able to create bass lines for original music when you're ready to join a band. Good luck!

What, are you crazy, dude? It is never too late to start practicing an instrument. Ya know, there are lots of really old people who never played an instrument before and then they take lessons from my dad and get really good. Old as in 60-75. Not old as in 15.
