I'm starting a vegetable garden. Should I completely discard the grass sod or can I just till it?

Friend, you don't have to go all these troubles if you're using Mel Bartholomew's "square foot gardening" methods. Since you're just starting a new garden, don't go the old ways of gardening. Check this out first and then you decide. It might save you a lot of grief.

I'll gave you the link, www.squarefootgardening.com, but if you're not sure to go there you can borrow this book from your local Library. It's called the "All New Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew. I can assure you it'll change your gardening methods forever.

I would get rid of the sod. If you just till it under you will still have live grass rootings that can take hold & you end up with a grassy garden.

After lifting the sod, till the soil, add a good mulch and then plant.

You can take each piece of sod and shake the dirt from it, or turn it completely over so that the grass is underneath , or you can till it deeper than the thickness of the sod. Unless you completely remove or kill the grass it will return.

Tilling the grass in will work just fine as long as it is worked in deep enough and cut up fine enough. You don't want big hunks of sod on top where you have to plant.

A lot of people till their grass under..as for me I prefer to pull it out..with all the seeds in it .. it just makes for more pulling later. There are better mulches to use.
