I got a guinea pig 5 months ago and I no they like to live in pairs but the women in the shop said it will be ok on it's own, but I am worried my guinea pig is getting lonely so I want to get another one for company but I am worried they will fight constantly. Is it safe to get another one?

If you have a female, get another female pig. If you have a male, get a female. They will probably breed and you will need to find homes for the offspring. If you keep several of both genders, then they should all be fine. Two males and one female will be trouble. If you don't know the gender, turn your pig over on its back and press down lightly above the genitalia. A male will show a small protruding penis, a female not. Females also have more prominent nipples, but not when they are young. They are fun pets and can be quite tame.

It would have been better to get two at the beginning because the younger they are the better chance you have of a happily bonded pair.

Please do not breed your guinea pigs. There are so many guinea pigs in shelters waiting to be adopted. Pet store people are also notorious for getting the sex of a guinea pig wrong. Even if you don't want a mixed pare you might end up with one. Check out some of the really cute piggies up for adoption on this web site.

To find a shelter in your area search the Internet for "small animal shelter (your state or city)."

it depends on the guinnea pig. usually boys will fight each other and a boy and girl will have babies. But i had mice a few years ago and after one died i wanted to get another to keep the other one company. But the old mouse attacked the new mouse, so they had to have seperate cages. Maybe the pet store would let you bring your guinnea pig in or do a test run with one of theirs???

regrettably that's impossible to have male guinea pigs residing at the same time as quickly as they attain sexual adulthood regardless of in the event that they have been from the comparable muddle as quickly as they attain that age they could began to combat and bringing in a sparkling guinea pig will do the comparable. while you're prepared to take a place the money you need to purchase a woman and function her spayed while she reaches the age of sexual adulthood or you're starting to be to be so lots extra guinea pigs in a quick quantity of time. i could in basic terms recommend which you spend a superb style of time with Ace making optimistic to set aside a pair of hours for him an afternoon regardless of if its you sitting and petting him once you're watching television or doing homework the interplay would be very constructive to him good success

we had one guinea pig and later on got another. I've forgotten which was male and which was female (which one we had first, that is). they never ever had babies. but they got along fine. ask at the pet store if you can return the new one if they don't get along. it's REALLY hard to tell the sex, so good luck.
