I do not recommend it. It is upgradeable, but likely will cost you more than a new one to upgrade it.
XP needs Pentium 3 or above, and I recommend 256 Mb ram or more, and you should have AT least 20 gig hard drive. If the computer you are considering has those, at a minimum, you could put XP on it for about $200..but why, when you can get kubuntu for free at www.kubuntu.org

Why would you buy a 7 year old computer?
Dell are very limited upgradeability... lots of them have custom motherboard layouts that no other mobos will fit, so you are limited to memory and disk upgrades and (maybe) to a slightly faster second hand CPU.
Will it run XP? If it's a P III 400 MHz or faster with 256Mb of RAM it will probably run XP, but it will be slow and you'll get annoyed with it. And when you load it with applications it will get really slow.

Anything is upgradeable. It may require some research on your part. First thing you would have to do is upgrade the RAM. XP can run with, at the least, 256MB. It is preferred to run with 512MB. It cruises along with 1GB if you're not running games and stuff like that. After upgrading that, you would want to look into a new video card, possibly a faster hard drive.

it should be I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 which I believe is about 8 years old now and it has XP in it now and I am just going to put a bigger hard drive in it and it will be good to go for another year or two....Check out ebay you might be able to find one that someone has already upgraded or you could find one thats brand new for pretty cheap but for me upgrading to a new harddrive is the best way to go at about 200$ on ebay (or less) which is much better than spending 1300$ or more on a new laptop....Good luck I hope this helped you a bit

Really old for a computer. The most you'll be able to run is windows 95 or if your lucky windows 98. Shop around you'll find a newer one that will run XP for a reasonable price.

it's a prefab computer.
why not try from fresh... take your time and get a computer made with your specs.
it'll be a money saver in the long run.
prefabs are hard when it comes to upgrades in both hardware and of course software.
you'll be happier with a computer made with your specs and the computer will be expandable...
