I have noproblems with that "look", and I love that store. But I was curious about why the employees dress that way and I did not want to offend anyone or embarass anyone by asking them straight out...at the store. So if anyone has a friend who works there or does work there,maybe you could tell me. Thanks...

i work at a music store and teach guitar lessons, but in the past i've worked at different places, including a Spencer Gifts, and my friend worked at hot topic.
they're not usually looking for someone that LOOKS a certain way, but usually the people that are into the kinds of stuff that are in those stores are the people that also dress kinda different, much like the stuff that they're selling. its important to hire people who know what you sell, and and are in touch with that type of customer. if you're comfortable with that kind of stuff, and its what you like, chances are you're already wearing it, and it doesnt bother you when senior citizens look at you funny. lol.
if you're gonna buy purple hair dye, chances are the kid with piercings and the blue hair can answer your questions better than some guy in a suit and tie.

People definitely hire to suit the image of their store. It's unofficial, but most "alternative" stores hire people that look a certain way. For example everyone in West 49 dresses emo/skater. It's just the way it works! Plus I suppose they'd assume those people would know more about their products and have more relevant fashion advice for customers.

I think the people who want a job at Hot Topic are the kind who like wearing those types of clothes. They like to sell what they enjoy, and they probably get discounts on the fashions and things they like anyway.
I like Hot Topics too, it's a great place for me to get gifts for my kids!!!

No, I think they just wear the stuff that the store sells and that's what they like to wear. If you want that job then you probably dress like that.
