We just washed the car and now the rear lights stay on even when we turn the car off. We tried taking out the fuse and putting it back and that didn't work. What could this be? Thanks.

It's not the brake lights, by the way. The brake lights come on when you press brake. The rear lights stay on as if you turn on your headlights for night time driving. What could this be?

It's a subaru.

If its the tail lights and not the brake lights then you can forget about the brake light switch. You can also ignore the fuses - that will make them not work at all.

First thing to check is all of the bulbs in the rear. Your looking for blown or shorted out bulbs. An example:

Yesterday we had a Camry in the shop. The brake lights stayed on all the time except when you actually hit the brake pedal, then the dashboard would light up! First thing I did was check the bulbs. One had literally exploded - little bits of shattered glass everywhere - but that wasn't the problem. Another was blown but intact. On a third bulb the contacts at the base of the bulb had melted and fused together. This was probably caused when one of the other two bulbs blew out and it shorted the connection. Then there was a 4th bulb, a dual-filiment tail/brake light bulb where the brake light filiment had blown out and one end had fallen on to the tail light filiment, shorting that connection. The combination of all of the above caused all the wierd behavior.

The above is an extreme case but I can't tell you how many times I have seen one shorted bulb cause all manner of problems.

If it happens to be a Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable with an adjustable brake pedal, then the brake light switch gets contaminated with grease. Ford will replace the switch under the recall below.
