Srinivāsa Aiyangār Rāmānujan was an almost completely self-taught Indian mathematician. He proved many theorems in unconventional ways, and had the habit of only writing down the result of his proof, and so many of his theorems were only proved years later. In his lifetime, he contributed over 3000 theorems to the mathematical world. His formula for pi is

1/pi = 2sqrt(2)/9801* sum{0->inf} of (4k)!(1103+26390k)/((k!)^4* 396^(4k))

This may look convoluted, but it is correct and converges EXTREMELY quickly. Many modern pi-calculating engines use this expression.
