It didn't, the telephone didn't exist 200 years ago.
It was invented in 1876, which makes it 131 years old. It didn't really get into homes until the turn of the century, which means it changed America 100 years ago. I'm not usually one to correct people, but if this is a homework question, that little discrepancy would fail you. Then everyone else' answers apply. Suddenly you didn't have to travel to get ahold of someone, which improved the quality of life all around as we got what we needed faster (like calling the doctor instead of sending someone out for a doctor). It brought people closer together.

It's easy, it brought communication closer for each other, it was easier to communicate, one just had to dial a number, well OK, get connected by the operator in those days, then people could actually speak to one another, it saved writing letters, telegrams being delivered, mine you you had to have a telephone to have this quick easy service.

it made communications with the masses much easier and from country to country (mostly in the politcal/governmental sense) much faster. There were no more letters that took several months, no telegrams that could be easily intercepted, and it probably improved relations in foreign policy.

it opened up communication lines across the globe/country, and it made the post office less used and it made the lives of millions of people much easier, though it took a few years to perfect and spread
