I'm 16, going to an "alternative high school" not because of drugs or crime, but because i messed around in high school and didn't put enough effort in my work and failed all my classes. as i said before Im 16, and still have virtually no credits at all. if i get on the ball now, and try to finish up high school where I'm at, it'll take me till I'm 19 or 20, to graduate. still, i would graduate though. i actually hope to become a writer someday, and would start of for like two years at some community college, and then go four years at ISU, that's iowa state university. what are all of your thoughts on my predicament? should i give up? or keep on till i graduate, does it seem as if i still have a chance in this thing, or n? your opinions would be appreciated.

You've got an excellent course plotted out and I really don't have anything to add except keep it up and everything should work out. Your chances are very high you'll end up with a BA or BS when you're 23-25 (and, since some people take 5-6 years to complete undergrad, you'll be "catching up" with a lot of them).

After you get your diploma, you should enroll in the community college, spend two years there (and get an AS or AA), and then move on ISU or another four-year undergraduate institution.

I would definitely do the high school diploma route over GED because you'll have less explaining to do later on down the road (and a GED is often considered slightly inferior to a high school diploma even if they're supposed to be treated equally).

The only glitch I can think of is that some colleges are going to frown on the fact that you got your high school diploma later than you were supposed to but most should understand the situation and appreciate the effort you put in to get your academic career and life back on track.

I have a friend who graduated high school at 21 and is now a "serious" businessman, very successful and acheived his dreams.

At 16 you might feel old for high school, and in high school it's difficult to be the oldest. I guess that's why you're in the alternative high school, it would be very awkward being in your situation

But once you get to college, age won't matter as much, some people take a few years out to have a baby or to save up money. And when you enter the work force, it'll matter even less.

My grandfather set all kinds of records as the youngest graduate, youngest doctor at a hospital, youngest this and that... he even died early, before I was born.

Two years isn't a very big deal out of the 72 years most people are expected to live.

Your plan sounds well thought out, and should work well for you, IF you can maintain the level of commitment necessary. Your plan calls for 9-10 more years of schooling. Another option I would recommend is going to high school for 1-2 years, getting your GED, going to community college for a couple years, and then head off to ISU. It would require less of a time commitment,.

Umm, no. actual, many years in the past i presumed that my existence might want to resemble Rory Gilmore's. i might want to bypass to an outstanding college, bypass to a with somewhat of luck Ivy League college, fall in love, and then stay out my dream. it continually regarded like an outstanding plan, i ought to say. yet basing your existence off of a probably suitable television tutor personality isn't the most suitable concept. Now i'm in my sophomore year of a sparkling extreme college, and that i have *actual* no concept what i pick to do with my existence. that is like... that is like I savour maximum of those matters, yet they are fairly difficult and that i could not imagine pursuing them! there is continually been component of me that desires to grow to be a mathematician, yet I actual won't be able to see myself like that contained in the authentic international. Or an author/author. i don't think of I have thechronic or the interest to make it. i glance round me and that i won't be able to imagine of a ingredient that i'm fairly fairly smitten by, that i might want to have the want to make my occupation. This sounds terrible, and that i have not advised everybody this, yet i hit upon the idea of settling right down to start up a relations somewhat depressing. My mum and dad are the coolest mum and dad contained in the international, and they are so satisfied, yet they sit at dinner and communicate about authentic sources and figure gossip. And we are all in hysterics, and it truly is a lot exciting, yet at the same time, i do not opt for to be one in each of those 40 year olds that has a huge relations. yet at the same time, I do opt for youngsters, i imagine. So i fairly don't know. i wager if i attempt to seem ahead to my destiny, i'm no longer pleased with any of the further life like ideas, and that i do not precisely know what 'life like' is for me. you at the on the spot are not on my own, Eliza. believe me, haha :)

I think you should do your plan. Don't give up, unless you want to have to flip burgers all of your life.
