Most websites list approximately 20 or so...however, it is believed that he is responsible for hundreds. During Leonardo's time the more you painted, the better your chances of eating, therefore a lot of artists would employ the help of apprentices to finish works they had started. If one takes into account the sketches of the human anatomy (particularly the fetus in the womb...pretty impressive for 15th-16th century!) there could possibly be thousands! Leonardo was quite impressive. Most people only know his more famous works such as the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper and Virgin on the Rocks, but after studying Art History, I have found out that he was a mathematician, a scientist, sculptor, inventor and not to mention the architectural contributions! Fewer than 20 paintings are known to be from him according to art historians. The number that still exist are probably closer to about 16. About a third of them are in a room in the Louvre in Paris most famous of which is the Mona Lisa. One is in the National Gallery in Washington D.C. The rest are scattered throughout Europe.
