why New York City is called the capital of the world?

I'm writting a research paper about Race in my comunity and I need to know why New York city is called the capital of the world?

Never heard New York city is the capital of the world. I live in Spain. New York has no significance here. It might be a beautiful city to visit, but thats it.

Maybe New Yorkers are stuck up?
