When I'm listening to my best friend's problems, all I can think of to say is "I'm sorry". I feel like that is very inadequate, but I don't know what else to say. Is there something I can say that really shows how much I care? Because I really do. Thank you.

I've known her my whole life and she usually doesn't unload her problems on me, but she's going through a really hard time in her life. Her parents don't trust her although she's never done anything to deserve that. Also another girl from school is jealous of my friend's boyfriend and makes my friend's life a living hell (she backstabs, talks about her, and turns people against her). Also her ex-boyfriend keeps calling her just to yell at her. I just want to know how to help. Thanks.

It depends on whether its a girl or a guy.

With a guy, the only reason they talk about problems is to find an answer to it. So give him a solution or advice.

With a girl, they don't want a solution, they want someone to listen to them so they can get it off their chest.

So just by being there to listen shows more than any words we could ever come up with, than you do indeed care.

I would stick to listening, offering a Kleenex when needed, and saying "I'm sorry". Steer away from saying too much. You probably do more good listening and asking probing (non-judgmental) questions. Never give advise, especially to someone that is highly emotional. Most times, people just need to vent with someone that they trust: you.
You're a great friend, keep on going the way you are.

Tell your best friend that she is not the only person with problems because there are a lot of other people with a lot of problems just like her. Just listen to her telling you her problems shows that you care about her.

Sometimes silents speaks volumes. Alot of times, your friends just need to talk and needs someone to listen to them. A hug would be good too sometimes. Them just knowing you care, means a lot.

People only tells their problems cause they want you to be their counselor and blame things on you should something go wrong. Just tell them what can I do to help and if it is beyond your being or doing, Just tell them I'm sorry and wish I could help but cannot or can depending on the situation.

You just being there and listening to her shows how much you care. or you can just give her a hug. It is better some times to just listen then it is to talk and give advice.

It would be more helpful if you have a specific example, but just tell them that you care. tell that that you will always be there for them, no matter what ahppens and they can always come to you when they need help.
