I saw it as a movie and don't remember if it was subtitled or not. I would like to read this if it is a book also.

I *think* it was set in Germany

It was about one of the World Wars and a patrol of each army was set to stand guard over something during the winter. The patrols were small... as the winter progressed and they were detached from the bigger parts of their armies, the two opposing patrols ended up becoming friends and trading cigarettes and drinks and such. Then spring came and I don't remember the rest.
