I go around barefoot whenever I can, so often it's a moot question. No, I don't recall going to anyone's house where they didn't wear shoes. If I went to someone's house where people didn't wear shoes inside, I would, of course, remove any footwear I was wearing. But it's not a thing in my culture to remove footwear inside the house, so, no. Edit after reading most of the other answers: WOW! I wish you'd asked people to say where they live. I wonder where all these people who automatically take off their shoes live. It's never been normal or accepted where I've ever been. I live in northern California (have also lived in Oregon and in Canada -- just south of Detriot). It sounds ruder to me, reading all these "always!" responces -- not that it's a cultural-norm thing (as in, say, Japan), but on the assumption that the carpet is a more important thing that the guests. Everyone has feet. The idea that walking on the bottom of the room is some horrible thing to do, only because the bottom of people comes in contact with dirt -- I don't know; that just sounds like putting stuff above people. As someone who goes barefooted, what I get is disgust at the uncovered human foot. This almost universal taking off of shoes seems bizarre! Waht about women who wear panty-hose? Those wouldn't last 15 seconds in these shoe-less houses. All those answers really blew my mind!

I always look around for the pile of shoes at the door. If there is a pile of shoes and the host answers the door in socks then just take your shoes off too. If I am not sure I will just say "Do you want me to take my shoes off in your house?" Then they can tell you either way. If they say it is up to you then I always remove mine because I feel it is the polite thing to do. I have a no shoes allowed house and if someone asks me I say "thank you we are a stocking feet only home."

depends.......if the house you go is from a comfortable friend, then take notice if they have a carpet. always ask if it's the policy of the house, to remove your shoes. if they say yes, don't be angry, be happy that u are taking off your shoes in someone else's house! it's a sign of respect! also, if you notice a pile of shoes in a corner, and they got a nice carpet of fur, then obviously, take them off. if the friend says no, not to worry, then cool...at least the smell of feet won't twist anyone's stomach and no one will notice that hole in the sock!...just j/k =o)

First, you should get some comfortable shoes that you don't need to take off in such a situation. I like Clark's and Born's clogs. You didn't mention whether you're at your new girlfriend's house or at the boss's house for dinner. When in doubt, don't.

A good sign of having to remove your shoes in the house is a bunch of shoes lined up by the doorway. If in doubt..ask.

In Hawai'i everyone is expected to shuck their shoes off at the door before stepping inside - - - a trait inherited from Japanese custom. Why track dirt into someone's house? Go for it but do wear clean socks or have your toenails trimmed.
Peace.....

As long as the host/hostess is shoeless, I think that clears the way for you to take off your shoes. If you were to visit my home, you could certainly leave your shoes at the door.

I never wear shoes anywhere, not everyone likes it but I won't wear shoes for anyone, formal situation or not, first time I meet them or not.
