By backpack ... I assume you don't mean camping. Very few camping places in Mexico. No safe places to camp alone. Leave your stuff for 5 minutes and it's gone.

Since you don't mean camping .. the next problem is hotels and dogs. Not easy to find pet friendly places.

Third on the list is the paper work and updated health certificates needed to cross borders.

Since you can't hitch-hike ... taking a dog on a bus is next to impossible. Leave him home!!

With proper shots and permits you can take your dog in and out of Mexico. However, you will have to time your pace to the dog's. Is it a big fella? It it isn't you might end up carrying it. Its hot and buggy along the coast, lots of ticks near the beaches and wetlands. You might find some motels that will let you keep the dog inside but they are rare. A charming idea but not so great for the dog.

i definitely do not support the idea to bring you dog with you to backpacking in mexico... first, it's hot and it's most likely for the dog to dehydrate unless you are willing to stop every other 5 minutes to give him/her water... second, it's exhausting for a dog... there are many skin conditions that your dog can develop from the heat and other things...

for your dog's best interest, don't take him/her with you...

have fun

Getting the dog INTO Mexico is not a problem.
It's getting the dog back OUT. He will have to be quarantined for several weeks at a State facility at YOUR expense.

Stinks, huh? I would love to take my dog too!
